if you have the authority all this can be confirmed through the telcos, I'd assume.

My understanding is that Ashby was hired because he was homosexual. This was disclosed or sensed during the hiring process. But, as hetros are selective about partners, so too are they and Ashby was being selective and possibly even trying to be professional.

I don't see any glaring holes in the story.
