Australia, being girt by sea, is blessed with natural pandemic border defences. The fed and NsW govt should have used them to keep businesses open, people in work and relatively free internal movement. Instead they neglected to be leaders, learn from other jurisdictions and take health advice, which has proved to be a costly failure. They talk about the mental health issues could be more deadly than the virus. Well i hope they have learnt that long lockdowns are more mentally damaging than short lockdowns. As WA has demonstrated for the past 18 months that the local economy can still function well with tightly controlled borders and broad short sharp lockdowns when required. Sure some people and businesses will be impacted by border restrictions, but it is much better than every person and business being impacted by long lockdowns.

The rest of the country doesn't have same economy as WA. Without mining there's not much else. With iron ore being their one wood. Most other parts rely on tourism, international students and B2B trade.
