It seems that the ETH Zurich (Switzerland) made a breakthrough in long term ("seasonal") hydrogen storage, with 40 to 60 percent efficiency using iron ore + hydrogen <=> iron + water.
Hazer (not mentioned in the paper) could play a major role for producing hydrogen with a CO2 neutral or negative way at lowest cost.
"For the first time, we demonstrate a safe, simple and technically feasible strategy for seasonal hydrogen and energy storage, using a 0.21 m3 reactor and 250 kg of iron oxide. Two steps are involved: the reduction of iron oxide with hydrogen when energy is in excess (warm season) and the oxidation of iron with steam when energy is needed (cold season)."
