    Hi Two Frogs,

Despite your family history there is every possibility that you do not carry a mutated gene for breast cancer. Breast cancer now affects one in nine women in Australia, so many women are in your situation, wondering whether they will be affected too.

Definitely have the gene tests done, then you will know the degree of risk and can be advised by a genetic counselor and medical specialists as required. There is every possibility that you do not carry anymore risk than the rest of the population, as carriers are really quite rare and your family history is not so unusual, given that one in nine women in Australia can currently expect to get breast cancer during their lives.

There has been a rise of over 30% in the rate of occurrence over the last 30 years, as well as a significant broadening in the age range affected. Changes in farming methods, food additives, artificial sweeteners, margarine, pesticides, nuclear fallout... so many possible environmental factors.
Women are all at increased risk, but we can act to reduce that risk in many ways. Research and follow your heart as to what is right for you. Change your lifestyle as needs be, including your diet and stress levels where possible. Remember food can be medicine. Selenium is very important, you can supplement yourself with brazil nuts and mushrooms. All the best.
