Lux, your concern about everything being made in China are reasonable. Many people have worried about this total reliance upon one or two manufacturing nations for many years. Trying to regain some element of domestic self-sufficiency is I think what many nations should be doing. So its not that everybody disagrees but you need to understand that this isn't what is going on here.
What is happening is that Trump and billionaire / trillionaires that he wants to be, have figured out that they can reduce their own tax to virtually nothing by moving the US tax base from income tax to consumption tax. That is why he is promising to remove income tax whilst introducing massive tariffs which are a proxy for consumption tax. Better still they can convince lots of idiots to believe that tariffs are paid by foreigners when in fact they are paid by US companies who import foreign goods, materials etc and passed on to US consumers when they buy stuff. There is no free lunch here. 90% of the US population will pay more tax but it won't be called tax, it will be called inflation and it will be inflated because of tariffs on goods coming into the US. Trilionaires will get a massive tax reduction so its hardly surprising they all jumped to support this brainwave of an idea.
