The Victorian premier has responded to reports the state’s health chief has stepped down, on the state’s deadliest day of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton, who has led the state’s coronavirus battle, was absent from the last two press conferences held by Premier Daniel Andrews.
But the premier’s office has told 7NEWS the health chief is on leave and has not stood down from his role.
7NEWS understands the rumours are “absolutely untrue” and Sutton will return following a number of days off.
Health Minister Jenny Mikakos has also come out swinging against reports of the health chief’s resignation.
Sutton’s resignation would have come as a devastating blow to the state as it grapples with a record death toll and surging cases.
Victoria recorded 725 new infections overnight and 15 more deaths, one of which was a man in his 30s.
He is the state’s youngest-ever COVID-19 victim.
From Wednesday night, all but essential businesses and industries will be forced into hibernation as Stage 4 restrictions come into effect.
