Barnaby may play well in Queensland but in northern Vic, western NSW and regional SA he won't win many votes.
The perception is he works for the people with the biggest pockets. If the coal and gas lobby are against the farmers, then he will do the bidding of coal and gas. If multinational companies are demanding extra water while whole towns die for the lack of it downstream, he will support the multinationals.
All the while he'll keep a dog and pony show happening, saying in the media the total opposite of what is really happening. The bush got conned by him for a long time, but you can't ignore dead fish and losing access to your own land forever. Barnaby's political convictions seem to fall into the same category as his beliefs on marriage and religion. Passionately held, but discarded as soon as something more interesting to him comes along.
