The NATs need instability like they need a hole in the head. Any talk along these lines, particularly by Barnaby himself, reduces the chances of a coalition Government victory.
What the results tonight show is that the drought needs to break and there needs to be government action to restore river health for the Nats to win back votes. As someone who lives in the Ballina electorate where a Greens candidate is returned on the back of an environmental vote I can see first hand the problem the Nats face. The vote out west was won by the dead fish and dry river publicity.
Barnaby can't fix that. Nor will coal powered power get votes at this stage. A lot of Nat supporters are also worried about global warming. Those that are deniers will vote Coalition anyway. Governments are won or lost by the swinging voters.
