Had the raid been successful, the Japanese could have maintained a/ a few cruiser division/s in the Indian ocean with their attendant float planes and blocked off easy access, all supplies to Au would have had to come the long way. If the Japanese controlled the Indian ocean, then their submarines would have caused havoc outside the Australian west coast ports or on the likely approach routes to the east coast.
