Israeli supreme court bars appointment of Sharon adviser
JERUSALEM, JUNE 15

Israel's supreme court Friday barred the appointment of a former intelligence agent involved in the summary killing of two Palestinians as an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

The court issued an injunction forbidding the appointment of Ehud Yatom as Sharon's "anti-terrorist" adviser until the case can be decided by a tribunal, on the submission of two members of the left-wing opposition Meretz party.

Yatom, named by Sharon at the beginning of this week, was among several officials of the domestic intelligence agency Shin Beth sacked following the murder of two Palestinians who had hijacked a bus and held the passengers hostage in 1984.

Yatom said he had personally killed the two men, who died from blows from a stone or a rifle butt after their capture, but later went back on his statement.

Since then he has been refused all state civilian or military jobs he has sought, even though he and his colleagues were given a presidential pardon.

"Ehud Yatom is linked to the murder of terrorists who had their hands tied. He is known for his extremist ideas and has been barred from various public offices," Meretz leader Yossi Sarid said.

Yatom's appointment by Sharon has yet to be approved by the authority which vets senior civil servants.

Yatom, 53, is the brother of Dany Yatom, a former head of the Israeli secret service Mossad, who was an adviser to Sharon's predecessor as prime minister Ehud Barak.
