Israel's Foreign Minister has given the Belgian ambassador a severe dressing down following the decision by Belgium's Supreme Court to prosecute the Israeli Prime Minister for war crimes.

Israel immediately withdrew its own ambassador from Brussels.

Israel is furious over the court's decision to allow 23 survivors of the massacres in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in southern Lebanon in 1982 to take action against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who was Defence Minister when between 800 and 2000 refugees, were slaughtered by Israeli backed Christian militias.

The court stipulated that Mr Sharon could not be prosecuted until he leaves office because of diplomatic immunity.

But it clears the way for the immediate prosecution of the current director general of the Israeli Defence Ministry Amos Yaron who was the commander of Israeli forces in Lebanon in 1982.
