that’s amusing. I’m in uk at present staying with my BiL who has lived here over fifty years. Brits are reserved with strangers too. But of course they have friendships where that reserve is no longer present. No different in NZ. Maybe the person who wrote the article was insufferably superior or boring or kept referring to “back home”
