I am a lawyer and and engineer and have been looking at the problem of applying AI to legal reasoning for over 10 years. It is not simple.

First problem is technical, in that you need to encode legal information in a digital form to input to the AI system. Now this is easy for a video stream which is inherently digital. However a word document of a legal submission is not sufficient digital coding for an AI system. You need something like Watson that ascribes a digital signature to each word - this works OK for chatbots and such, but is nowhere near the sophistication needed for legal analysis.

Second problem is cultural. The legal system is based on explanations of reasoning and precedent. Now a rules based system offers some hope of explaining a decision, but a neural net system does not - simply because it identifies patterns that may not be otherwise apparent. The appearance of justice is paramount, that is why decisions are published with reasons, both to confirm that they comply with historical cases, and also to establish new principles where the facts of a case demand. A black box AI system that does not show its reasoning will be largely unacceptable to the legal profession, and I suspect the general public.

There are also a whole set of problems in the middle where the network has to learn, and as far as I am aware, and I have spent a lot of time looking, no one has solved that problem for legal information.

Brainchip probably does have a role in video analysis, but horses for courses, do not expect it to be able to tackle all problem domains simply because we think they need intelligence.

All jokes aside, SNN/CNN are moving ahead in leaps and bounds. The trajectory of their achievements will be like nothing the world has ever seen. Look at the development of Google AlphaGo playing Go as an example. V1 beat the human 3/2, V2 beat V1 100/0 a few months later. My point being, it won’t be long before computers do a lot more legal work.
