Indeed Brainwave, I believe this is true. They connect their fibre optic cables through the wall and are able to 'pip the post' by thousands of a second, effectively getting their order in ahead of any detected market moving price action. I believe I experienced this on at least one occasion when passion fingers hit the buy for 200,000 units instead of 2,000. In less than a heartbeat another out of character order was ahead of mine. Worked in my favour this time as I frantically cancelled my wrong input order.
The same argument that Short traders use - such behaviour is good for the market because it adds to the liquidity to the market which of course is good for all. I believe a fee is paid to allow these algorithm traders to connect direct like this. If I am wrong about this practice, please let me know and I will gladly retract my belief/opinion.
