DSL/ADSL, broadband sounds wonderful. When can I get it? Where can I get it? When can I afford it?
Looking at a representative sample of what is available, the current price of data seems to be about 20c per megabyte. Let's see. A typical CD holds 650MB. Who do you know who would pay $130 for a CD?
"Come enjoy broadband", the ads proclaim. "Watch movies online!", they say. A good quality movie typically takes about 1.5GB. Telstra charges somewhere in the vicinity of $90 per month with a 3GB cap. Two movies and you have hit the 3GB cap. Who do you know who would pay $45 to see a movie?
Admittedly getting the infrastructure in place is expensive and this has to be paid for, but until the telcos get sensible with their pricing they can hype the market as much as they like, but people still will not be able to afford it.
cheers
