extracta ... your behind the times my friend ... Sir Dr David Mackay (now deceased) was a believer that human carbon dioxide emissions were driving climate change (which empirical science tends to contradict but anyway...).... he was an eminent physicist and has done some great work on renewable arrays ... he concluded that carbon capture and nuclear energy was required to provide baseload electricity to the UK approximately 14 days before he died ... so firstly renewables do not supply either enough electricity let alone reliable despatchable electricity .... secondly they require too much land area (such that to provide electricity to the UK market using wind turbines alone would require an area of land much larger than the UK (unrealistic) .... thirdly they require much more mining (as you have alluded to) than the other energy sources (hyrdrocarbon and nuclear (especially)). This is why a number of eminent environmentalists wrote an open letter to the French and South Korean Presidents saying that they needed to maintain their nuclear power industry especially if they wanted to get internal combustion engines out of major cities. This may have been a consideration of the French President when he curtailed his countries programme shutting down nuclear power station. Exactly opposite to what you say I personally am waiting for the renewable energy associated company's to collapse ... their business model seems to be based on speculation multiplied by speculation..... a market that does not exist but is forecast to exist X technology that does not exist but is looking very promising X required resources that are bountiful though currently have only small market demand X company valuations that look scary to me.
The below list may or may not be correct. It may also explain why the ABC and Fairfax are the way they are .....
