in general I think far too much is made of shorts, but since you’ve compiled some great data I’ll add my 2 cents.

I also started noticing the same trend a few weeks ago. I.e. many days were 3-4m shares are sold short but the net short position was never getting larger than roughly 500k shares.

The only explanation I had is that shorters must have been opening a position and closing it on the same day. But this also didn’t make sense because on most of these days the SP had moved less than 7/8%

is it possible that someone was using shorts to try and get more sell volume into the depth (I.e. so they could accumulate more at a lower average price?).

As an example - 15m sold short on the 28th - were all of these shorters legitimate shorters and just got absolutely demolished and take a loss?
