    Good article. I've done a fair bit of researching on this topic and I notice Alumitech was mentioned. Alumitech professes to have a closed loop system ... mmmmm

    Alumitech kicked off around 1995 and was bought by Zemex in Canada for $3.1m somewhere between 1997 and 2002 depending what you read. It received a US grant of $400,000 to develop the tech and Alumitech itself kicked in another $900,000 on top.

    Alumitech was subsequently sold to Aleris in 2006 for $29m.

    The question is why did Zemex sell it and why didn't Alcoa step in and buy it? Borderline profitability or some other reason. Well, from what I've read the technology only recovers 80% of material going to landfill and that could be one reason.

    How the tech works I don't know. There is a patent on it so it could be searched out.

    The other interesting thing I've noticed is that this type of tech and maybe the technology that Alreco has could be applied to the recovery of other types of metals from waste not just aluminium. Now that would be a bonus!
