PNV’s product was used on all except one victim of the White Island volcano accident. The results for surviving patients were viewed as miraculous given the unusual array and severity of burns. A Sydney based surgeon will shortly do a presentation to the American Burns Association on the use of BTM on a volcano victim.

I’ve seen progress reported on four of the burns victims of the White Island volcano accident, which occurred on 9 December last year. It will doubtlessly be a long, hard road to recovery for these four victims, but all have reported excellent early progress.

A touring American couple both received burns in the accident. The husband suffered burns to 30% of his body, including on his hands, legs and face, while the wife had burns to 20% of her body, including on her right leg, hands and face. On 24 January it was reported that the couple were making “amazing progress”. They were able to return to the United States in early February and are receiving outpatient care from a burns centre there.

A critically injured tour guide aged in her 20s, who sustained full thickness burns to 45% of her body, reported in early February that she was making “huge progress” and that “everything is healing twice as fast as anyone predicted”.

Another critically injured patient was a 19 year old male tour guide who received burns to 80% of his body and was operated on by burns surgeons from Australia. By mid-January the patient had been moved out of ICU at Middlemore Hospital and into the National Burns Centre. He reported on 19 January that he had already been able to use his ipad to catch up with his friends after bandages had been removed from his fingers.
