You are confusing the difference between JPM acting as intermediary/broker and as principal trader. As an intermediary/broker facilitating, they are simply providing liquidity to the clients who wants to short STX. JPM doesn't lose the money. They simply provide the shares to shorters. Think of it as banks providing loans to investors. Whether the investor makes or loses money is irrelevant to the bank as long as the borrower can repay the loan.
