TAIWANESE MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURERS COMMITTING TO MORE ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION MODELS

Taiwan is amongst the global leaders in emissions control and in the introduction of new technologies for 2 wheeler vehicles. Taiwan's 5th stage regulation is being implemented this year and calls for emissions controls for 3 years of vehicle life and/or 15,000 kms at levels equivalent to the Euro 3 emissions standards in place in Europe.

To meet the new emissions requirements for both the domestic market and export to Europe, the three major 2 wheeler manufacturers in Taiwan (Kymco, Sanyang and Yamaha Taiwan) are introducing new Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) products ranging from 125 through to 500 cc engine displacement. Yamaha Taiwan, at the recent Taiwan International Motorcycle Industry Show, unveiled plans for all Yamaha Taiwan 2 wheeler products to be EFI by 2009.

Whilst automotive style EFI has been available for high end models in Europe for some years, Taiwan is leading the introduction of EFI systems designed and manufactured for the high volume every day use scooter and motorcycle. The Taiwanese OEMs have all developed their motorcycle EFI systems either in-house or with support of their preferred suppliers.

Synerject, Orbital's 50:50 Joint Development Partnership Company with SiemensVDO is a key supplier to some of the major Taiwanese OEMs.

Taiwanese motorcycle manufacturers produced over 1.4 million scooter and motorcycles in 2006, with approximately 50% for domestic market and 50% for export markets. Kymco, Sanyang and Yamaha Taiwan account for close to 90% of the Taiwanese 2 wheeler production.
