In the long run I think your view will prove to be correct, large less complex more replicably resources have better potential to game change.
However, imo, long before that the renaissance in geotherm will spread from the traditional "natural" resources to niche artificial/enhanced situations. I still have my bets on a single horse PTR, but HEWI etc all has risk.
Have you read the MIT report on enhanced geothermal? Free to download, even just reading the summary is worthwhile to understand something of some of the challenges. Good review of past work, much of the rest is spreadsheet generated waffle. I have more respect for GDY's efforts after reading some of this report.
