Sorry to be so inaccurate. 2015-2016, feels like decades ago with all that has changed in my life & the world. So years rather than decades.
And yeah, I keep some cash laying around, as I have been thru or know others who have experienced occasions of eftpos failures, internet banking crashes, phones, internet interruptions, actual physical credit card failures, scams, hacking attempts, credit card fraud etc etc. Our vulnerability increases with the complexity of our systems.
If you believe any human made system is unbreakable or unhackable, you are seriously deluded. Ask the north koreans enjoying their newly stolen bitcoin. Do you really think nobody is trying to hack banks? Minuscule risk is still a risk.
Like you, (I assume) I use such systems daily without fear, but with the knowledge that things can and do go wrong occasionally. I accept the risks but take some precautions.
