Correct BishySmacks we don't need one, but then again you don't need a lot of things that provide value. Having a programmable digital currency provides significant opportunity and innovation (allows anyone to integrate the financial system into applications). Being able to use smart contracts for business provides significant advantages such as security (remove third party risk), transparency (imagine economic figures like inflation etc being in real time and publicly available, no inside information), being able to automate processes, costs savings and speed etc just to name a few. But then again a government controlled digital currency can go both ways and be extremely bad for freedom and the average person. Personally I would never adopt a gov controlled programmable digital currency.
