I think there is a report as part of the Resource Consent process that identifies the benefits to flow directly into the local community. For Escarpment only the figure is not to be sneezed at! Pretty much the full US$86/tn with the exception of the sea freight component (although some of that would be for the benfit of the port).

I can see how the Fairdown residents wouldn't want a stockpile near their house, but I think the project needs to be looked at by the local community with a national perspective too - let's face it, our NZ cousins have had it tough the last 12 months or so and their economy as a whole (not just Westport) needs this project to happen.
