If the parties want to reduce migration & make it more targeted to actual needs of the country then they need to stop looking at it a macro level & start issuing visas on specific skilled needs.
The occupations in demand list for skilled migration is a joke.
Temporary visas should be tied to temporary contracts for specific roles that can't be filled by people already in Australia either who have the skills or can be trained.
Looking at migration levels before increasing training & education of Australians is putting the cart before the horse.
Upskill & train more people in specific areas where there skills shortfalls for 2-5 years then cut the migration intake for those occupations.
Australia has had a shortage of nurses, doctors etc etc for decades only by training people already in Australia will this eternal problem be solved,
Importing more people on a permanent basis to fill these roles just creates a bigger demand for these roles through a higher population.
Same goes for housing, Importing more builders creates a bigger demand for houses.
