Not sure that Martin Ferguson should cop too much flack about this government's apparent disinterest in geothermal sector. Australia has been stuck with huge oil imports pushing up our trade deficit and a fairly lazy oil and gas industry (lots of companies sitting on undeveloped resources off the coast of WA). That should be his main energy focus and it is likely that the geothermal sector is at best on the periphery of his line of sight.

However also not sure that Penny Wong and Peter Garrett are doing developing technologies and sectors like geothermal any favours. Since signing the kyoto agreement this current government has at best been running on the spot on this issue - really disappointing given they represented novel energy solutions as one of their strong suits. I suspect that Wong got the gig because she is a safe pair of hands. In fact what we actually need in her positin is someone with vision and courage (but who has those qualities in the class of 2007?).

The fact that Martin Ferguson is straight away trying to fix this suggests that it was an oversight rather than wilful neglect by him (which probably means a lack of lobbying by Wong and Garrett of Ferguson and his advisors in the lead up to the budget).
