It listed the 20 most popular VET FEE-HELP courses at TAFE colleges last year and found, in every case, that private colleges charged, on average, significantly more for the same courses.

In one case, for the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building), TAFEs charged an average fee of $3914 compared with $20,071 at private colleges, more than five times more.

There were also huge fee differences for the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care ($4378 at TAFE and $15,158 at private colleges), the Diploma of Community Services Work ($5576 at TAFE and $13,771 at private colleges), the Diploma of Events ($6123 at TAFE and $19,393 at private colleges) and the Diploma of Hospitality ($7023 at TAFE and $19,152 at private colleges).
"This data shows that unscrupulous providers have been trying to boost their profit margins well beyond the actual course costs," Senator Birmingham said.

"Unfortunately, the failed VET FEE-HELP scheme gave regulators no powers to crack down on ballooning course costs so dodgy training organisations could exploit the system and taxpayer funds."
