    A looming production shortfall is expected to cause platinum prices to rise substantially between 2008 and 2012. Platinum staged a slight retreat after reaching a high of $US108 an ounce in February 2008, although an expected production shortfall of around 500 million ounces is expected to lead to further price increases.
