"solar is not cost effective" ????
Hear this statement all the time, but it is based on outdated figures. For a current example of cost, in Perth today, a small rooftop solar system produces electricity at around 60c per kWH or, if you take out government subsidies, it is around 90c per kWH. Now this compares reasonably well with coal fired power and could probably do even better with economy of scale. The real problem for coal (and other centralised power stations) is distribution costs. I can generate my own electricity for 90c per kWH but it costs me 284 c per kWH to buy coal generated power. Now there are a lot of obvious problems relying solely on Solar but generation cost is not one.

I asked PB about possibility of generating electricity at Powder River and reply was "not worth it except for LNC on-site use" as the distribution cost killed it. The real game was and still is GTL.
