WA has for the first time accounted for more than half of all resources jobs advertised nationally, as the State continues to be the minerals powerhouse of the nation.

In the quarter between June and August, WA’s share of national advertised mining jobs hit 53 per cent of the total volume identified, according to an analysis of the data for the Minerals Council of Australia and CoverCard.

It’s the first time in just over four years where WA has made up more than half of advertisements, having accounted for 43 and 47 per cent in the previous two quarters.

There were 9108 new skilled trades introduced into the mining industry over the June to August period, up from 8750 from March to May.

WA accounted for 53 per cent of the jobs — up 6 per cent — with Queensland down 8 per cent to 23 per cent.
Gavin Lind, general manager of safety, workforce and innovation at the MCA, said the data proved there was no better time for West Australians to seek out work in the mining sector.

“There are jobs available to West Australians like never before and all credit to our WA colleagues and businesses,” Mr Lind said.

Analysis of the advertised jobs also showed there had been a decline in diversity requirements over the past year after a steady increase since 2016.

Mr Lind said the slight fall in diversity requirements could be a reflection of the current COVID environment, in that businesses wanted to get jobs filled as quickly as possible.
“I don’t think it’s because businesses have taken their eyes off boosting diversity,” he said.

Federal Resources Minister Keith Pitt said it was vital diversity in mining did not continue to fall and issued a warning to the sector not to drop the ball.

“No industry sector is totally immune from the financial pressures of the global pandemic, but I would expect mining companies to maintain their record of diversity across their workforce,” Mr Pitt told The West Australian.
It was also revealed in the data that advertised fly-in, fly-out roles in WA had increased 3 per cent to 36 per cent, with WA and the Northern Territory remaining the States dominant in referencing FIFO.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said there was no better place to be in the world right now than WA and “there is no better place in the world when it comes to mining jobs”.

“WA’s COVID-19 response has meant we are one of the safest places in the world to do business, and our economy has opened up far more than other parts of the world,” Mr McGowan said. “We urge anyone across Australia working FIFO in WA, to relocate to WA and make our State your home.”
