Good morning week end NRW perusers

    This is good news?
…The old Altura camp is going spare …. Although it does not have the highest cyclone rating.
There must be plenty of others that do?
No two storey cafes or couples suites at a second hand mining camp…..
    - Years back I visited  one where the highlight seemed to be a white box thumping away under the blazing sun with not even an awning over the top of it.  - It was defiantly making  ice cubes.
…. But then it’s only a two week stay?

    cheers

Mining industry explores potential COVID-19 quarantine hub in WA’s North West to attract overseas workers

The mining industry is exploring the potential for a COVID-19 quarantine hub in WA’s North West so they can fly in skilled workers from overseas.

The Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA is leading the project, which includes looking into the possibility of relocating existing mine accommodation and facilities to a new site.

Proximity to an airport that can take international flights, in particular from South-East Asia, is a priority. Options could include Port Hedland, Broome and Learmonth.

It would take a minimum of six months to be established, take only foreign workers who were vaccinated, and require approval from the State and Federal governments.

The concept emerged as a priority out of the State Government’s recent Skills Summit, where industries — which also included agriculture, construction and hospitality — flagged the need for quarantine centres dedicated to skills migration.

“A number of different members have some ideas, it’s about us playing a bit of an aggregation role as to what opportunities and constraints exist out there and then coming back with a bit more of a fulsome scope on how things might be progressed,” CME WA policy director Rob Carruthers said.

“Obviously timing is going to be key, but I think what has influenced the motivation coming out of the Skills Summit is that there’s not going to be any certainty on international borders anytime soon, so we do need to have the capacity for quarantine outside of hotels to support skills migration.
“It would be on the basis that anyone coming in would be fully vaccinated and identified to fill shortages in the industry.”

It is yet to be determined who will pay for building and operating the quarantine centre, but it is reasonable to expect the iron ore giants — which have enjoyed bumper profits during the pandemic — will contribute.

As reported in The West Australian in June, the WA mining sector will be short of 33,000 workers by the second half of 2023 without reforms to encourage interstate and international migration.

The projected labour squeeze is putting at risk $140 billion of projects in the pipeline.

A State Government spokeswoman said the mining industry had yet to submit a proposal for its quarantine facility, adding “the Government has taken swift action to progress ideas identified to attract and retain skilled workers in WA”.
