Also Australia has a small military compared with China and really needs the support of the USA militarily , in fact maybe a military and environmental tariff on China is more appropriate , as it costs Australian tax payers to build up its military to counter the build up in military by China and also costs Australia environmentally with the waste China is putting into the oceans and CO2 into the atmosphere .
Then there is also the theft of technology by China from Silicon valley , plus sea lane restrictions in the South CHina sea around the Spratley Islands
China needs to get a bloody nose and Trump is happy to oblige unlike his predecessor better a bit of short term pain to the USA consumers rather than to be rear ended (euphemism ) .
