Buru Energy to send first oil shipment

Preparations are underway for Buru Energy's first crude oil shipment from the Kimberley.

The company is currently extracting 1400 barrels a day from the Canning Basin and the first full ship will be ready to leave next week.

Wyndham Port CEO Tony Chafer says it's bound for a refinery in south-east Asia.

"It's been going very very well. We have had the ship arrive in Port on the 4th of January," he said.

"It's sitting off at anchor at the moment and we expect it to be alongside the wharf on around the 16th of January, taking the first load of crude."

For the next two years Buru Energy will use Wyndham as its export base, until upgrades are completed at Broome Port.

Business with the oil and gas company has come at a good time says Mr Chafer.

"It's been a fairly quiet time at the port recently, with the loss of the coastal shipping service and also the downturn in the cattle industry, so this is very timely indeed."

Mr Chafer says Wyndham Port also anticipating an increase in production from the company.

"At the current extraction rates we're looking at the tank filling every 21 days. You're looking at every 30 days before a full shipment leaves

"They're expecting to ramp up production in the next few months. We're sitting at around 1400 barrels a day now, and then potentially going up to 5000 barrels a day.

"When they get to those sort of levels then we'll be looking at an alternative shipping strategy... like a transhipment arrangement.""
