In Afghanistan it was not such much wanting the yanks that was important but the fact that the UN got involved after the stuffing had been knocked out of the Taliban.
It has helped install a more humane government and hopefully the UN will stick with it to oversee it's viability and the future democratisation of the Afghani institutions.
If the US and GB go ahead unilaterally and successfully remove the present regime I'm sure the UN will still want to get involved in Irak with the same objectives.
