Just google "Changing the security Order" it is a good read.

In the article they talked about the wedge sealing method and how it wasn't suitable for combat, I believe there were a number of reasons why they changed to the modified tail method! they were very important reasons, they achieved a much much better method, and this method will become even more important in a weapon called the axially fed machine gun.

1/ the wedge sealing method had failed once or twice, not often but enough to warrant a better method!

2/ It didn't take into account any barrel wear, which only increased the likelyhood of failure when the barrel was worn.

3/ It didn't lend itself to ease of reloading, once the tail of the projectile had flared in the barrel to achieve sealing it makes it harder to move any unfired rounds to allow insertion of extra rounds, with the modified tail method the main sealing is achieved between the tail of the front round and the head of the following round, and to aid this as well the propellant is sealed with foil, wax , or other sealing methods witin the tail, upon firing of the first projectile the tail does flare a small amount against the outer wall of the barrel on the rounds to the rear , this aids in keeping them in situ I believe, but not so much that loading extra rounds is difficult, this would be extremely important in the 3GL, Redback Firestorm etc where new rounds are inserted from the rear, sometimes when there are still unfired rounds in that particular barrel.
