And the miners already pay taxes and royalties, including tax on profits earned o/s, there is no exemption for them. Australia is better off for having them and SA would be better off if BHP spent the many billions to get Olympic Dam operating flat out. No way is that going to happen if the gov puts their hand out for the lion's share of receipts.
As for it being "OUR" minerals, why don't "WE" dig it up and export it? We do that by contracting miners with the "know how" to do it on our behalf, that's what permits and royalties are all about. There is plenty of iron ore around Townsville you can dig up and sell if you like. Good luck with that.
