The number of rigs is up to 121 which represents a 20% increase since March. Continental Resources (CLR: 43.15 +2.20%) has really stepped up their drilling activity and now has 17 drilling rigs versus the 11 they had in March. EOG (EOG: 95.16 +1.14%) has kept the number of rigs it has in operation constant at 13 and Whiting Petroleum [WLL] has increased from 9 to 11. With the well publicized PR issue offshore drilling now has due to the BP Gulf fiasco, the Bakken region may actually be viewed as a flight to quality and potentially less risky as offshore counterparts.
