Buy and hold might work ok for high quality US companies which pay high dividends.

But overall I agree, think stock market for investors ended in 09 been a volatile ride ever since and will continue to be so until governments sort out the huge debt issues and quant trading is slowed down if not eliminated completely.

In the mean time trade the market you have not the one you want and trade long or short.
