I'm trying to buy minnows and hold till they are mackerel. :)
My first "coulda been" was Mincor which I was buying @ 12.5c. It would now be a 15 bagger and it has been paying divs for years, but I got out because they had a Cu property in Pakistan. Missed!!!!
The next was Bolnisi. We thought we were on a winner and it would still be OK had we copped the volatility of CXC, Another miss.
My big winner is Redback mining. They delisted here and became RBI.TSX. I was never able to trade them during the GFC but my ASX stuff had some margin loans and I didn't save very much in '08.
"The biggest issue I have with a buy/hold is that the portfolio slowly (fast) gets totally out of balance." As Dkit says. RBI was bought by Kinross and is now 75% of my portfolio but I still don't want to sell a winner. It is up over 2,000%.
I am now retired and I should be in div paying stuff but I just can't change my spots. Besides, I will eventually be getting 100% div return on my initial stake. That's not too shabby.
