Cities have major problems from ageing infrastructure...burst water mains, sewerage, power failures etc. Maybe these were the reasons many ancient cities were abandoned. It may be cheaper to up and move a few kms away and build again. The economic reason that Sydney is sited where it is has probably been overtaken many years ago. It is now there because the people are there....ha ha
