    MY intuitive response is that selling into the buyback only works if straight away ( before even getting the BHP money ) you immediately buy more more BHP ,this way you don't lose your position but harvest the capital gains.It only works if you have a really really low taxable income.With buybacks you dont really have control over the price you get.eg To my cost I sold into a buyback just before sept 11 2001...the markets were in turmoil..I was nevertheless sold out for a pittance and the price of that stock has since trippled. Buybacks only help the poor and superfunds. As a general rule just follow nancy reagans advice and just say NO.
