I am a US investor. It is simply not true that it is difficult for US investors to buy shares on the ASX. Two years ago I opened a brokerage account with Fidelity Investments specifically with the intent to buy shares on the ASX. After the account was active I then only had to fill out some paperwork to add the international trading option to the account. It was very easy and quick to do so. I know that this is also true for Schwab as I have a Schwab account and they have a global trading option. The difference is this, both Fidelity and Schwab have no trading fees when I buy US/OTC shares, but for buying shares on the ASX there is a A$32 fee. So it is more expensive to buy ASX shares, but that is just the price you have to pay to play.
