China recorded a $US20.4 billion ($A21.44 billion) trade surplus in May, customs data showed on Saturday, widening from the previous month and ahead of expectations.
Exports increased 1.0 per cent last month, year on year, while imports went down 0.3 per cent, customs authorities said in a statement.
