Every country that can have nuclear subs does. Australia is in that lucky position.

The diesel subs should be bought off a production line that is making them already. It takes decades to develop the capacity and iron out the production wrinkles. The first of a kind always have problems, subsequent vessels are cheaper and better as production continues.

It is madness to use submarine building as a job creation opportunity in Australia. We don't have the skills and experience in this field. There are cheaper ways to make more suitable jobs in easier industries. The minor maintenance task is a different skill set.

The ancillary services of training schools, instruction manuals, etc should also be sourced from the supplier.

Defence should procure the best bang for bucks, not be viewed as a make work provider.

Diesel subs are quieter than nuclear subs.
They are hands down best choice for defending Australia waters.
Nuclear subs are better for travelling longer distances, they are better for supporting US to attacking China near China's coast.
