You have made a delineation between shareholders and BAU the company itself. Assuming this is the case one might assume shareholders are interested in share price and the company interested in market cap?
(the cash outlay for buyback has been defined)
Maintaining market cap with a reduction in shares on issue would naturally involve an increase in share price.
So either they expect no positive news in near future (12 months) and a lower mc regardless or trying to buy cheap and effectively drive mc lower intentionally??? Both unlikely scenarios to me.
Seems to contradict the buyback announcement to me
