oh,boy....bought my last house, a terrace in Annandale, Sydney in 1998 after we moved in with the kids for a while, but they kicked us out cause we wouldn't tidy our room. It cost $240k, lived in it & did most of the reno myself using recycled material @ $42k, sold it in 2004 for $600k. In 1998 I was 55 yrs. old. You have to be prepared to get dirty and do some crap work though. Admittedly it was before GST, and councils are harder to deal with now, but I still think it can still be done, it's just that gen x are not prepared to do without for a while & look at the big picture.
