So I called him back in my lunch break and he said he finally got the go ahead to counter-offer $21,500 to my $21,000. Sorry mate, I said, but a deal has already been done. Have you signed anything he asked? Yep, deposit paid. We had a brief, amicable chat and that was that.

As the day wore and I thought about it more my annoyance started to increase. Not so much over the $800 which is really here nor there when compared to my misadventures on the sharemarket, but no, I was starting to feel disappointed for the young salesman because it his sales manager that lost him sale. On the day my initial offer of $21,000 was run by the sales manager and the counter offer came back of $23,500. When you advertised big EOFY sales and then only offer $500 off buyers tend to walk out a little jaded which is what I ended up doing. A better counter offer may have kept me in the chair a little longer with the discussion ongoing. Anyway, as I was walking out the salesman introduced me to the sales manager who was leaning up against the wall. We said we could not reach as agreement and as I left the sales manager looked at me and said "I wish you the best of luck" in a manner that implied you'll never get what you want at that price. Two days later that same sales manager approved $21,500 but his obtuse behavior on the day had already cost the salesman the sale. Not only that but the sales manager would have known full well on the day he could have made that offer or something close to it; he didn't need two days to umm and ahh over it or "crunch" some serious numbers. Did he not think I was serious? It was my third time there, I was out in the cold and rain and said I was ready to buy.

Had similar a few years ago...looking to buy a 2nd hand Honda Accord. 1st dealer had a couple, one I liked but changeover price just out of my reach.
Eventually bought from another dealer the next day.
The following day the 1st dealer rings me to ask if I'd bought anything yet.
I said I had , at a more agreeable changeover.....and...wait for it.....he says "oh, we could have matched that"
You wonder sometimes.
