Australia launches pre-combustion CO2 capture project

Australia’s Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) has launched a three-year study of pre-combustion carbon capture technologies.

The CO2CRC/HRL Mulgrave Capture Project will look at three technologies – solvent, membrane and absorbent – for capturing CO2 from the next generation of high-efficiency power stations.

To test the new technologies, three CO2 capture rigs have been commissioned at HRL’s gasifier research facility at Mulgrave in Melbourne.

“The CO2CRC rigs will capture CO2 from syngas, the product of the brown coal gasifier,” explains chief technologist at CO2CRC, Barry Hooper. “The capture technologies are equally applicable to syngas from brown and black coal, gas or biomass fuels.”

The researchers will compare solvent, membrane and absorbent capture technologies for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

“Our key objective is to reduce the technical risk and cost of capturing CO2 from the next generation of coal gasification power stations,” says Hooper.

The project, which is an exciting step up from lab research, will help demonstrate that carbon capture and storage is not only possible but practical, he adds.

The work is being support by the regional Victorian Government and is part of the Australian Government’s carbon capture and storage research programme."
