You would need to be an Australian citizen or to at least link it to an Australian bank account I think. You may be able to open an Australian bank account as a US citizen I'm not sure.
Surely you can open online share trading accounts in the US that can trade on platforms around the world? My Comsec account let's me trade in the US, UK and other jurisdictions.
A quick Google search throws up several options in the US to trade in Australia. Here is one example.
